Within a month of moving to California, I saw the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane play a free six-hour concert in Golden Gate Park. Because of a gang-related stabbing that day, it turned out to be the last such event for six years. This shot was taken on the day the city's ban was lifted and the Dead and the Jefferson Starship again played the park.

As a writer/editor for Guitar Player and Frets magazines, I had the good fortune to interview Garcia five times. I've never found a musician who could articulate his thoughts about music and the guitar with such passion and precision.
